“blackmouth” is the live version of the classic soul/disco sampling house tune. take the work of others who came before you and turn it into a danceable jam. “got blues?” uses the work of a blind 1930s blues bongo player to form a weirdo repetitive rhythm tool: another example of using a forgotten artist for one’s own gain. the titular song, “co-opted & exoticized” plays on the classic preacher vocal track.

massimiliano pagliara debuts on ostgut ton with his new ep, time and again. born and raised in the deep south of italy massimiliano pagliara made his way to berlin in 2001, quickly diving headfirst into the german capital’s club scene (particularly berghain’s predecessor club, ostgut) until he started djing in 2003. by the time of his joining with ostgut booking agency in october 2015 massi had already constantly delivered – the dj and producer has left a strong mark on house music throughout the years with energetic, playful and deep sets behind the decks, two acclaimed solo albums on live at robert johnson and various collaboration projects. his residency at panorama bar therefore was a no-brainer – but the musical link by one of house music’s finest with the club’s label was still missing. now massi steps up with four new tracks and his first release on ostgut ton.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.

sensor001 kicks off with a massive 5 track ep from one of the label heads himself, brian sanhaji. road-testing those tracks in his highly recommended live set’s during the last months. ‚specular reflections’ seems to be straight out of his modular synth rack with raw, sonic sequences over bass heavy analog drumming. hard hitting, stepping techno to serve the dance floor.

the protagonist of this extended longplayer is the remarkable falke. he is the unseen hermit of the clan and arrested the labels attention due the things he does best: sitting at home collecting cheap ancient technology and creating his own artistic universe, influenced by his distinct sense for the simplistic beauty in everyday life. after two records and several compilation contributions, the label collected ten tracks to introduce his own extensive world properly. post-socialistic aesthetic detects 90s electronica to merge into a careless version of house.

incoming! adult only 46 is here and it’s another biggie. chris carrier’s trusty label always delivers the funk and this release is no exception. featuring rhythm&soul plus russian newcomers belogurov and orbit and the bossman carrier himself, it’s comprised four tracks, all with their own unique groove and atmosphere – perfect for anyone who loves deep rhythmic house music with hypnotic sensibilities. rhythm&soul takes one side of the record, the first of his tracks ‘take off’ comes in with sturdy beats pushes things along at a steady pace. his use of ‘live’ sounding percussion is evident throughout, working perfectly alongside a captivating double bass keeping things moving. if you manage to stay still while this is playing then there’s something wrong with you, utterly irresistible. the second track from the madrid-based producer is another upbeat joint. the deep bassline bounces up and down while razor sharp hats slice and dice their way through the lower end. as with most of rhythm&soul’s work, there are lots of nuances and details peppering the track, keeping it interesting from start to finish. on the flip side we have the russian boys belogurov and orbit, who deliver eight minutes of pleasure with ‘jysk’. smooth cosmic grooves rise up off this steaming hot, sensual cut. a naughty allure emanates from this track as it moves forward, subtle pads swirling in the background to suck you in and keep you locked to the groove. and to round things off, chris carrier delivers a typically eccentric roll out. subtle beats are placed over an analogue low end together with a selection of strange sounds direct from carrier’s well-equipped lab. variations in the rhythm and texture keep this one interesting all the way until the end.and there it is, another hot one from the adult only camp… strictly for over 18s!

repress! when three people run a label together it is exceptionally rare to find a positive unified opinion of a record on first listen. when isolée sent his -mangroove- ep to maeve, this was in fact what happened. but it is isolée after all.... mangroove came about last summer when the drifter happened to catch isolée s live set at a festival in switzerland. instantly blown away by the a side -pisco- he was determined to find out what it was and if it was to be released. after chatting, isolée suggested that he would send -pisco- along with a couple of other -demos- to maeve and a few days later the ep was happening. isolée has created some of the most important and beautiful records of our generation and has being a huge influence on what we do, thus we are incredibly excited and humbled to release his work. this three track ep shows several different sides of the frankfurt native, from the a-side dance floor catalyst that is -pisco- to the deeper dubbier b-sides of -l5 syndrome- and -mangrove-. this is the perfect record to mark our tenth release.

claudio casalini s best record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. grupo almendra hailed from venezuela, and they released their sole album almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of latin american musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of grupo almendra.

ondon-based duo jamka return with inter alia, the latest evidence of their patient, intimate relationship with their analogue machines. from the start there’s a sense of event – we encounter clear, interlaced electronic textures, powerful analogue drones and well-placed beats. the tracks aren’t soundscapes so much as fertile electronic soundfields. patemp continuously expands in an incredibly subtle but powerful way and shows that jamka’s technical skills don’t preclude an emotional touch. on the tight and minimal anazmo, the coiled energy bears traces of minimal techno and radical electronica, but it’s beyond either of these. while the album passes quickly, it’s full of detail and the thoughtfulness and craft that have gone into it are evident. dwa offers the chance to appreciate the flow and the sheen of its analogue textures – the modernist romance of the power line hum and its promise of technological-cultural progress. jamka are known for their dynamic live performances and this energy is almost tangible on derazor. the stately igora is a strong, bold close to the album, offering surprises right till the end. the sharp, metallic details ripple through the mix and an anthemic sequence shines through. inter alia makes clear that jamka are worthy inheritors of slovakia’s proud late modernist traditions of radical architecture and electronic music. this is a work of craft that demands respect and repeated listening.

nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie. thats how belgian dj producer boogie belgique (aka oswald cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producers forte. this is pleasingly evident on volta, the latest boogie belgique album for the cold busted label. jungle law gives a glimpse into boogie belgiques sonic palette. tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. album opener go slow shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. its a beautiful concoction, and boogie belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

savage grounds return to lux rec for the third time, with their third record. atrocities comes after unpleasant music for unpleasant people, released in 2015, and over fences, 2014. it is, as much as the previous 2, the result of investigations in music, live, composed with a minimum amount of instruments. the duo, comprised of cco and daniele cosmo, worked with a roland 606, a roland 909 and a modular synthesiser. experimenting with fm modulation and loose sequences. the result is concrete noise, anger, ghostly voices, and above all, the sheer conscience of human failures. atrocities marks number 30 in the lux rec catalogue. it comes as a 12inch + 7inch package.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.
